The city of Pisa rises above the banks of the river Arno near near the mouth of the river at Marina of Pisa. It is one of the more important cities of Tuscany and it is well-known for its symbol the leaning tower.

Pisa is both an ancient and modern city. On one hand proud of its past as a Marittime Republic when it became a world power during the Middle Ages and on the other now famous for having three of the most important universities in Italy: The Scuola Normale Superiore, the Sant? Anna school of Advanced Studies and the University of Pisa.

The Luminara festival is held on June 16th. At sunset, all the lights along the river Arno are dimmed and more than 10,000 candles are lit. It is a spectacular sight to watch from the bridges and especially from the famed Ponte di Mezzo. Various activities are organized in the streets and the night ends with a big firework display.

A short drive or train ride from Pisa is Lucca, a walled historical city that endears itself to everyone who visits. Hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls the cobbled streets, elegant piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to explore on foot or riding the bicycles offered for rent in many points throughout the city. Lucca has many boutiques, historic cafes and restaurants. The nearby Torre del Lago hosts a summer Puccini festival.
